in a lot of ways i feel like i should have gotten a different degree because i feel as an adult my interests are much more creatively driven. but the culture insists that you decide your fate at age 17-19 and then have to stick with it for the rest of your life

How you know a job description was not written by someone who has a clue about anything:
Tumblr media
Let's go over this:
Literally everyone knows what the fuck JSON stands for, no one needs this clarified
JSON is not a programming language, you do not develop software using it
JSON is extremely simple, no one needs 10+ years experience with it, once you have spent a couple months using it you have probably learned everything there is to know about it

I now know the devastating feelings of being laid off of work.
Mind racing.
Am I reasonably competitive in the current Software Engineer job market? Don’t think about that yet.
Oh noes, I’ll have to study for coding interviews *again*. No stop, wait until Monday. Do ANYTHING ELSE.
Cuddle stuffed animal. Hug husband. Call mom, dad, sister. Join their vacation coming up. Stick to good news. Play Minecraft. Fold laundry. Play Overwatch. Plan house decorations. Rewatch Spider-verse. Little things.

Deeply depressed. Frustrated with people and dealing with their feelings and having to deal with my feelings. We are holding on by a thread and currently trying not to catastrophize and say that being laid off has ruined my entire life, even though it feels like it has by denying me an income, rescinding health insurance, and triggering my ex-partner to spiral and burn down his life and the life we had together. Literally during my call with a recruiter today he said hmm it’s a hard sell with only eight months of industry experience; to fucking get anywhere anymore you need at least a year if you’re not currently enrolled in an undergrad program getting an internship.
I was able to convince him that it actually is worth his while to put me up for an interview (and he did, on Monday, thank god), but imagine how much easier it would be if I had a year, year and a half, two years of experience. Imagine how different it would be if they had let me stay another year to take on more of the workload, I had my annual review and asked for a promotion, and they’d given it to me instead of having to lay me off, give me severance and COBRA, and spend a bunch of time hiring and training someone else. Imagine if we had actually received the additional training they had promised us for further upward mobility.
I’m working so hard not to catastrophize and to keep my feelings to myself and safe people, and I’m just like. All of this is their fault. This all stemmed from my layoff. So much of my life would be different if I still had a job.
And I am just so FRUSTRATED and also need to figure out a way to tell someone politely to fuck off and stay in their own lane, because he’s fucking up and knows it because he’s keeping it a secret!!
I just. need. a job.

Life update ✨
Last week, got an update, my internship’s been converted to a PPO (pre-placement offer)!! 💕
Super excited, because now the road ahead feels a little less foggy, before getting this verdict, i was so confused should i apply to more places? what if it doesn’t convert? should i start studying for MTech instead? like... if i didn’t convert, maybe studying more was the move? 🤔
But now, the chaos has settled a bit and things feel more in place making way for new chaos though, 😭 imposter syndrome is real. not sure if i’m fully ready but i’m willing to learn 👾
let’s see where this goes
any tips for this newbie to the tech cooporate world 🌎 ??

How to get into Coding!
Coding is very important now and in the future. Technology relies on coding and in the future you will need to know how to code to get a high-paying job. Many people consider having Computer Science field-related jobs, especially in AI. What if you are interested it in general or as a hobby? What if you don't know what you want to do yet for college?
Pick a language you want to learn: Personally, I started out with HTML and CSS. I recommend if you want to do web design HTML and CSS are good languages to start with. Otherwise, start with JavaScript or Python.
2. Find Resources: Basically you want to look at videos on YouTube, and take classes that have coding like AP CSP, AP CS A (harder class), Digital Information Technology, etc. You can also attend classes outside in the summer like CodeNinjas and use websites like code.org, freeCodeCamp, and Codecademy. Also, ask your friends for help too! You can find communities on Reddit and Discord as well.
3. Start Practicing: Practice slowly by doing small projects like making games for websites and apps. You can work with friends if you are still a beginner or need help. There's also open-source coding you can do!
4. Continue coding: If you don't continue, you will lose your skills. Be sure to always look up news on coding and different coding languages.
5. Certifications: If you are advanced in coding or want to learn more about technology, you can do certifications. This can cost a lot of money depending on what certification you are doing. Some school districts pay for your certification test. But if you take the test and pass, you can put it on your resume, and job recruiters/interviewers will be impressed! This can help with college applications and show initiative if you want a computer science degree. This shows you are a "master" of the language.

here’s my pro tip
everyone keeps pushing computer science without recognizing that the field is quickly becoming oversaturated. If you love CS, than sure, do that. But if you’re looking for a really marketable degree that will let you do CS but also leave the door open for other stem careers, then I highly recommend computer engineering or electrical engineering with a CS minor (optional - have an ee degree without a minor and I still work in software). You can still get a software job if you want, with the added bonus that a lot of CS people will think you’re a wizard for having a working knowledge of hardware. And as software jobs get harder to find and get, you can diversify and apply for hardware jobs. And the hardware jobs will be easier to get if you know how to code. Also, circuits are really fucking cool guys.

You can't forget your first mansplaining...
Tumblr media
June 3, 2024
Yes, another post today because I've been through my first heavy mansplaining, and it was so surreal!!! First, six men were with me in a Teams meeting, my boss called me to present, and my tech lead started talking while I was speaking... OK. Then, after some minutes, I said something and the guy from another team made a mess saying he didn't understand what I said (he told us that 5 times, at least), then, my tech lead told him he would explain it telling THE SAME THING I DID... the guy understood it all, promptly!!! I felt so small!!! I must admit I was so lucky with my previous teams, even suffering from a stupid bureaucracy, and an "old as hell" legacy code, I have never been through mansplaining so disgusting. The tech area still needs more education and awareness regarding this kind of shit! I will not give up, but I am sure that my shields will be harder and more alert for this kind of bullshit. God! We need to be tougher and tougher to live.
